Yelle October 4th, 2008 @ Merriweather Post Pavilion
by Katherine Gaines
You don't have to sing in english to make people dance. French pop singer Yelle proved that on Oct 13, at the 930 club. She laughed at the audience's pathetic attempts to sing "A Cause Des Garcons" to her, clearly they knew the melody but the words (aside from the name of the song) were a mystery.

The night opened up with the german electro duo kap10kurt who managed to get those who showed up early in a cheery mood. They even sampled an audience member shouting "ITS EEE LECK TRICK" for one song. Next up were Funeral Party who added guitars to the mix but kept it fun and upbeat.

Yelle made the fans wait a few extra minutes but the dramatic entrance with her head covered in fringe was worth it. The spry singer jumped around the stage swinging her hair and striking poses. She punctuated the sweet europan dance music with "merci beaucoup!' and broken english. She even stepped back to pound on the snare set up in the middle of the stage. The drummer and keyboardist joined in the fun running out to the front of the stage for hand claps and audience interaction.

"Are you ready to [dance/move/jump]?" she asked. The undulating crowd screamed for more. Many electronic acts hide behind keyboards and mixers relying on thumping bass and blinking lights to get the crowd going. Yelle proved a true rock frontwoman commanding attention amid all the dancing.
