With the concerts that have been popping up lately, one would think we suffered a time warp! Having seen Duran Duran earlier in the summer and Yaz coming up in a week it was so appropriate that we would be seeing the Rocking the Colonies tour when it kicked off in Washington DC on July 10th. This year's rendition brought The Alarm, The Fixx and The English Beat to the 9:30 club.
So with three bands on the bill, one of them had to be the "opener" so the night kicked off with The Alarm. Led by frontman Mike Peters, the band blazed through an energetic set that of course included their hit "Sixty Eight Guns" as well as "Spirit of 76" and "Stand". They also included quite a few from their recently release Guerilla Tactics but for some reason did not play "Rain in the Summertime". Sort of likened this set to when Marcy Playground performed at the first Rolling Rock Town Faire and failed to include "Sex & Candy" in their set. A bit disappointed with this decision but throughly enjoyed their set. Looking at Peters perform, one would never know that he had undergone chemotherapy a few years ago for chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
The Fixx was up next. Having seen them just two summers ago at HFStival I was looking forward to actually being able to see their entire set and I definitely wasn't disapointed. This band is energetic and interactive. I don't remember singer Cy Curnin being as fun to watch last time. He's a photographers dream! The set itself included of course "One Thing Leads to Another" as well as "Stand or Fall", and "Red Skies" that most would know even if they weren't a fan of the band. The posted list on the stage did not include "Saved by Zero" but they did close their set with it. For most fans of music of the 80s, they will know a few hit songs for a band but The Fixx has a loyal following here in the States and by the time they hit the stage, the crowd had shifted and their fans were up front singing and dancing along to their set. With a bill of bands such as these, you will find that some people came out for just one or two of the bands but by the end of the night found themselves fans of all three.
