STYX January 20th @ Ramshead Live!
by Courtney Campbell
From the opening sounds of "Blue Collar Man" to the end of "Renegade" Ramshead Live! was full of energy as the band STYX showed Baltimore that rock music isn't dead! This is a band that got their start in the 70s, broke up for a little bit and for the past 10 years, even with line-up changes, is going strong. A current t-shirt that they are selling displays that in black and white "Classic Rock - my ass! 1100 shows in 10 years"

One would think that with a band that has been around for such a long time that the sold out crowd would be all middle aged people looking to relive their youth but that wasn't to be the case. More and more the younger generation is getting into the sounds of those that came before and that was to be true this night as well. There were many in the crowd that were in their teens and there were some that hadn't even become a "tween". Great to see the younger generation enjoying music that doesn't include screaming and where you can actually understand the lyrics.

The set was a mix that spanned the career of the band from "Lady" on their first album to "One with Everything" on Cylorama. In the middle of the set was a nice treat as guitarist Tommy Shaw took to center stage with a mandolin in hand and talked about a song he brought forth to the band for the Cornerstone album. This track is one that the band would perform in Europe all the time but really wasn't played much here in the States - back on the Return to Paradise tour they did it in the midst of an acoustic set. The song was "Boat on the River" which is such a beautiful song and it was great to hear it live again. Another treat for the crowd was to have original bassist Chuck Panozzo join the band during "Fooling Yourself" and then again later in the set. He and JY are really the remaining original members and for the longtime STYX fans it was great to see him back out on stage with the band.

For a band that has been around as long as STYX has, it would have been great to have a longer set and other songs included but being that the singer isn't the original singer and some of those songs are just impossible to do, this show was just amazing. Great sound, great lights and excluding the drunks near me, great crowd.

Thanks to Fallon and Greg for taking care of me for this show.
