Stellastarr* managed to draw an ecstatic crowd out to the Rock and Roll Hotel on a Sunday night. Playing just a few small east coast shows to preview songs from their upcoming album it was a special night for the fans.
The openers U.S. Royalty were local and had a few friends around to watch, but mostly the crowd stayed several feet back from the stage. It seemed like the audience for Stellastarr* would be small, but a few minutes before they came on people appeared out of nowhere to fill out the room.
Watching Stellastarr* is a study in contrasts, with Amanda Tannen's almost stoic bass on the right and Michael Jurin's frenetic guitars on the left. Singer Shawn Christensen grounds the band with his powerful voice, continually getting lost in the music. For the heart wrenching "On My Own" he spent the entire song on his knees. Drummer Arthur Kremer earned a special cheer for a solid performance despite a recently injured finger
Of course they still treasure their post punk influences and played older songs like "Jenny" and "My Coco." The new songs blended in seamlessly and sounded great. For a taste head up to New York where the band are playing a string of 5 dates at Piano's. Get your tickets now as some are already sold out.
