| | Music genres come and go but through it all bands like The Prodigy are able to perservere. What is their secret? Just ask the sold out crowds at their current U.S. tour. Touring in support of their current album Invaders Must Die, the band made its first stop on the tour at the 9:30 Club in Washington DC.
The club was packed but that didn’t damper the spirits of those in attendance; it just added to the fervor. “My dance space” and “your dance space” became “our dance space” as the floor became one continuous undulating conglomerate. Hard to believe it’s been over a decade since such hits as “Breathe”, “Firestarter” and the ever controversial “Smack My Bitch Up”. Shhh don’t tell those in attendance!
The crowd and the band were in their element. Hard to believe that this was the same crowd that just stood in place during the opening DJ’s set. This wasn’t a dance club DJ crowd, this was a Prodigy crowd; one that fed off the energy coming from the duo of Keith Flint and Maxim Realty and tried to move in time to the beats generated by Liam Howlett. The new tracks such as “Warrior’s Dance”, “Invaders Must Die”, “Omen” and “World’s On Fire” blended seamlessley into the set that one couldn’t imagine what was being left out of the set to fit these in.
The night ended with “Out of Space” leaving the crowd tired from their contstant movement and wanting for more. If you get a chance, go see The Prodigy. Don’t say, “oh I’m not into dance music”. This band blends so many elements together that there is something for everybody to enjoy.
