For a band who hasn't toured in nearly three years, one couldn't tell by the show Mudvayne put on at Rams Head Live! on December 11th. Since this band has reinvented itself each time with their stage performance, many of us wondered prior to the show whether or not they would be in costume/makeup this time, especially since they did not on their previous club tour. Known for their theatrics, the makeup and lights are as much a part of Mudvayne as their music and tonight they did not disappoint.
Kicking off their set with "Not Falling", front man, Chad Gray, came out with a red mohawk, fake blood dripping down his face and a red gorilla outfit that was reminiscent of the black one he wore on Ozzfest a few years ago. He was joined by guitarist, Greg Tribbett, in costume with goggles and a hat while bassist, Ryan Martinie, and drummer, Matthew McDonough, were basically costume-less, unless you count Ryan's moustache as a costume. The rest of the band whipped the crowd into a frenzy which did not stop until the final notes of "Dig".
The set was filled with older songs which for a band that has just released a new album is a bit strange as most bands want to see a crowd’s reaction to their new music. This was more like a fan appreciation set by giving the crowd what they really wanted, the music that they loved from Mudvayne. Mudvayne will be on the road for much of 2009, so there is plenty of time to play the new material.
Part way through the set, off went the gorilla costume and Chad was left in his blue tick- striped overalls which some of you might remember from way back when he wore the bowler hat and had the bullet hold in the middle of his forehead. I can only imagine how hot it must have been onstage under that full costume. The stage had low lights along it that were very hot as well, so note to any other photographers – be careful not to lean on them.
The crowd was wild with many crowd surfers coming over the barricade at a time and this did not stop until the final notes of "Dig". The staff of Rams Head Live! definitely got a workout tonight.
