Creed August 16th & 21st, 2009 @ PNC Center & Nissan Pavilion
by Courtney Campbell
Reunion tours, they can be good or they can be bad. One tries to come back to the stage at the point they left off and that doesn’t always happen. So far this year we saw No Doubt come back just as strong as they left ( theirs really isn’t a reunion tour but they have been away for a bit) and just this past week we traveled to see Creed, twice.

It’s been 6 years since an official Creed show and 9 since we have seen the original lineup of Scott Stapp, Mark Tremonti, Brian Marshall and Brian Phillips. From the moment they stepped out on stage to kick off their set with “Ode” there was this great feeling in the air of excitement. This was a band that wasn’t just going through the motions on a tour. Here was a group of four (plus an additional touring guitarist) and thoroughly enjoyed what they were doing and those watching weren’t just watching; they were drawn in and held on for the ride. This was a ride that encompassed the career of this band from their first album back in 1997 with such songs as “Ode”, “My Own Prision”, “Torn”, “What’s This Life For”, “Unforgiven” and “One” to their new single “Overcome” on the soon to be released Full Circle.

The members were engaging with each other and played to the crowd. Their was pure joy on the faces of those on stage and one couldn’t help to smile, dance and sing along. Oh and what is a rock show without pyro! Not only did they have pyro on their second song in the set “Bullets” but for “What’s This Life For”, Stapp and Tremonti were up on a catwalk above drummer Brian Marshall when the shower of light came down. A perfect rock moment!

The main portion of the set ended with “Higher” and then came the three song encore of “One”,"One Last Breath" and "My Sacrifice”. With as many songs as this band has of course there would be some left off and I for one love some of the songs that weren’t singles such as “Young Grow Old” I can remember hearing this and “Arms Wide Open” and others from Human Clay back on tour in 1998 before they were recorded and loving these songs. Also, the version of “My Own Prison” that was performed was the single version and not the album version. Being picky but it’s a great song and I can see why they did the single version but it would have been great to hear the album version live again.

The new songs blended well with the old ones and one couldn’t not tell that this band had been off the road for all these years. If you can, catch them on the road, pick up their CD Full Circle when it is released in October. You won’t be disappointed.
