With all the road trips EarplugsRequired has been taking lately, we’ve been taking CDs with us for those parts of the country that don’t get any radio reception and Apocalyptica’s Worlds Collide has spent much time in the CD player. Needless to say, we were looking forward to seeing them live and we weren’t disappointed. For those who don’t know, Apocalyptica is a Finnish band that consists of three classically trained cellists and a drummer and most of their music is instrumental. But they’re not playing classical music; they’re playing metal/heavy rock. In fact, they started out covering Metallica songs that they worked out for the cello. On Worlds Collide, they had four guest vocalists that sang on the CD and for this tour, they recruited Toryn Green from Fuel to provide vocals on some of those songs.
Now if you’re thinking how boring…four cellists (they added an extra cellist for the tour) and a drummer and no words? Boring is one word that would never be used to describe the show. Apocalyptica was highly energetic and the crowd followed suit, moving along to the music throughout the entire set. They had a unique stage set with chairs for the cellists, but they didn’t use them much; they were all over the stage, cellos in tow. Toryn Green appeared for a few songs, including “I’m Not Jesus” (sung by Corey Taylor of Slipknot / Stone Sour on the CD) and “I Don’t Care” (sung by Adam Gontier of Three Days Grace on the CD and will be the next single). We were wondering if Toryn would be singing "Helden", which is actually a cover of David Bowie's "Heroes" sung in German by Rammstein's Till Lindemann. Unfortunately we didn't hear if Toryn had been practicing German, but at least we got the instrumental version of the song. They also played covers of 4 Metallica songs (“Fight Fire With Fire”, “Seek & Destroy”, “Enter Sandman”, and “Nothing Else Matters”), but the crowd didn't need Toryn as they took care of the vocals for those songs. Everyone had a great time at the show (us at EarplugsRequired included)…don’t pass up the opportunity to see Apocalyptica if you get a chance!
